How big is the Grand Canyon? Big isn’t the word… huge isn’t the word… in fact, words don’t do justice to a canyon that’s 277 miles long, 19 miles wide and over 5,000 feet deep. Come to think of it, numbers don’t do much better.
The magnitude and complexity of the Grand Canyon can only be truly appreciated by seeing it yourself. And the absolute best way to see the most of the Grand Canyon, as close as you can get to it, in the shortest amount of time is by helicopter. On Papillon Helicopters’ Imperial Tour, you’ll see parts of the Grand Canyon that are virtually inaccessible, even to the most hard-core hikers.
Originating at Grand Canyon National Park Airport in Tusayan, just minutes from the park entrance at Grand Canyon South Rim, the Imperial tour is conducted aboard Bell Jet Ranger helicopters. Resist the temptation to relax too much as you glide over the Kaibab National Forest – because soon, the forest is going to disappear!
The excitement you feel as you come face to face with one of the seven natural wonders of the world is indescribable! Upon crossing the canyon rim, you’ll veer eastward toward the South Rim’s highest and most dramatic viewpoints, such as Lipan Point and Desert View Point. Geologic wonders surround you on all sides, such as the sculpted cliffs of the Zuni Corridor, the jagged edges of the Little Colorado River gorge, and the hairpin turns of the Unkar Delta. The Grand Canyon is not all you’ll see; you’ll also fly over surrounding landmarks such as the Navajo Indian Reservation, the Painted Desert, and the Grand Canyon’s higher, more densely forested North Rim.
Since helicopters are given the lowest flying altitude of all Grand Canyon touring aircraft, you’ll be able to see up close into hidden nooks and alcoves, some of which cannot even be seen from the canyon rim. At some points, you’ll almost feel as though you can reach out and touch the canyon walls. Eventually, it’s time to return to the South Rim via the Dragon Corridor, one of the Grand Canyon’s deepest and widest sections.
The Imperial Helicopter Tour departs hourly from the Papillon’s exclusive heliport at the Grand Canyon National Park Airport in Tusayan, 1 mile South of the park gates.
