On the Monument Valley Air/Ground tour, your adventure will begin with a beautiful scenic flight aboard a high-wing airplane from Grand Canyon National Park Airport. Photo opportunities abound on this incredible journey, where you’ll soar over the vast expanses of the Grand Canyon and the Navajo Indian Reservation. After about one hour in the air, you land at a remote airstrip at world-famous Goulding’s Lodge, where Navajo Indian guides wait to show you the scenic wonderland they call home.
The road through Monument Valley was built in 1939 by John Ford during the making of the film “Stagecoach.” This would be the start of a decades-long love affair between Hollywood and this patch of land bordering Arizona and Utah. Entering the Valley floor, you’ll marvel at gravity-defying rock formations with names ranging from the logical to the whimsical, like “The Mittens,” “The Three Sisters,” even “E.T.’s Mother!”
Along the way, your guide will share the history and culture of the Navajo Indian people, who have resided in this land for hundreds of years. Keeping to the traditional “Blessing Way,” those who live in Monument Valley do so without modern conveniences like running water or electricity. Their dwellings, known in the Navajo language as “hogans,” are made of mud and straw, and their entrances always face East so they may greet the sunrise each morning. You’ll get to see one of these homes during your visit, along with demonstrations of traditional crafts such as rug weaving and silversmithing.
After lunch, it’s time to head back to Grand Canyon National Park Airport. The scenery you’ll have experienced is unbelievable, to be sure – what’s even more unbelievable is that you’ll have seen it all in about 4 hours. Space is very limited on this tour, so book your seats today.
