The Grand Canyon is huge – that much you can comprehend. But can you truly appreciate the Grand Canyon’s size, scope and significance just from standing on the rim? We didn’t think so either!
Make your once in a lifetime Grand Canyon vacation a memory that you’ll treasure, and a learning experience that will stay with you forever. On the North Canyon helicopter tour, you’ll see areas of the Grand Canyon that are virtually inaccessible to man – even the most hard-core hikers.
At Papillon Helicopters’ exclusive heliport Grand Canyon National Park Airport, just minutes from the Grand Canyon South Rim park entrance, you’ll climb aboard a Bell Jet Ranger helicopter.
After lifting off from your helipad, you’ll glide over the primeval Kaibab National Forest. But just as you’re getting relaxed, the forest disappears – and the depth of the Grand Canyon is right in your face! You have now “entered the Dragon.”
Named for a ridge whose silhouette resembles a dragon lying down, the Dragon Corridor is one of the Grand Canyon’s deepest and widest sections. As you soar past majestic buttes, jagged escarpments and impossible-looking spires, you can see all the way down the Colorado River. Upon doing so, you’ll begin to realize that there are complex forces still working on the Grand Canyon, and while millions of years of the Earth’s history have already been revealed, there may be more to come in the distant future.
After crossing the Dragon Corridor, you’ll get a glimpse of the Grand Canyon’s higher, quieter, more densely forested North Rim. A full 1,000’ higher than the South Rim, the North Rim looks and feels markedly different from the South Rim – unfortunately it takes 5 hours to drive there from the South Rim. Only in a helicopter can you get this up close and personal with the canyon from the air, and so quickly. You’ll return to the Grand Canyon National Park Airport via the Dragon Corridor also – a second chance to catch sights you might have missed on the flight over.
Flight length is approximately thirty minutes, but in that short amount of time, you’ll gain a deeper insight into the Grand Canyon’s complexity and magnitude than you ever could with just a passing glance from the rim.
