Southern Utah, August 14th, 1909 – A dozen men become the first Anglo-Americans to gaze upon a legend: a massive sandstone arch in a nearly perfect parabolic shape, stretching almost three hundred feet wide, soaring nearly three hundred feet into the air. It truly deserved the name the Navajo Indians had given it: “Nonnezoshi” – a rainbow turned to stone, or in English, “Rainbow Bridge.” For these brave, adventurous souls, the journey to Rainbow Bridge entailed a hot, dusty trek on horseback, followed by a grueling hike through a sun-scorched labyrinth of cliffs and canyons. That was then – this is now!
Today, you can experience the magic of Rainbow Bridge in safety and comfort with Lake Powell Resorts’ Scenic Cruise Adventures. Your adventure begins at beautiful Lake Powell Resort inside the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, just minutes from Page, Arizona. After checking in at the Boat Tour Desk, you’ll meet your U.S. Coast Guard Certified Captain and board your tour boat.
After sailing through picturesque Wahweap Bay and rounding Antelope Island, you’re on your way! On the Rainbow Bridge Scenic Cruise Adventure, getting to your destination is part of the fun. As you make your way Eastward, you’ll discover what makes Lake Powell one of the most scenic waterways in America: towering red sandstone, sparkling blue-green water, patterns in desert varnish that will paint pictures in your imagination. Lake Powell’s many intimate side canyons and alcoves will no doubt catch your eye as you sit back and relax on the enclosed indoor deck, or enjoy a refreshing breeze on the upper deck. Along the way, your captain will relate the important role Lake Powell plays in providing hydroelectric power and water to the arid Western U.S.
Upon arriving at the courtesy dock at Rainbow Bridge, you’ll disembark from your tour boat and have approximately one hour to walk to and enjoy Rainbow Bridge. Depending on the level of Lake Powell, which naturally fluctuates at different times of the year, the walk from the courtesy dock to Rainbow Bridge can be up to 1.5 miles in length. Because the walk to the bridge is uphill, visitors should be in reasonably good health before committing to this tour.
On the return voyage, those who opt for the full-day tour will also enjoy a stop at Dangling Rope Marina, a unique facility which can only be accessed by boat. Bring some money so you can enjoy a delicious soft-serve ice cream cone! The full day tour also includes a box lunch. The half day tour does not include a lunch, nor will you stop at Dangling Rope, but water, lemonade and coffee are provided on both tour options.
